PROJECT OVERVIEW
Year: 2016-2017 School Year
PART 1: GUIDED READING
For the beginning of this unit, students were separated into guided reading groups. All of the books in the unit focused on the same concepts-technology, the internet, and social media. Below there are reading schedules and assignments that were used during this unit.
While we read this book, we worked on reading techniques and strategies, summation, context clues, and persuasive techniques. We also were able to have deep conversations about the benefits and negatives of social media.

PART 2: PERSUASIVE ESSAY
After reading their guided reading books, students worked on writing 5 paragraph argumentative essays. Their essays had to answer the driving question: has the internet and social media made the world better or worse? Students used research and information from their guided reading books to formulate their opinions and arguments. They also learned about in-text citations, paraphrasing, bibliographies, and MLA formatting.
Their essays were then used to create a session to present at the student led Bett. Tech. Conference.

PART 3: PRESENTATION FOR THE BETT TECH CONFERENCE
Following the completion of the paper, students met with Mr. Maurer, a well-versed public speaker and conference presenter, to create proposals and presentations for the Bett. Tech. Conference. Once again, their proposal and presentation had to answer the driving question. They had to choose a specific aspect of the internet or social media and argue it's negatives or positives.
